Before you cut your hole try to get a look down an augered hole to see what you got and check depth to make sure your where you wanna be before you carve out a spearing hole.

I am new at this also got an old spear from my dad took my portable hunting blind on the Ice and set up we watched all day with one move to a new location we had a small pike come in and hit the sucker minnow my buddy had down about 15 mins later we slipped my (plastic) decoy in and it went about two feet under the ice and got hit by a 25 inch pike I grabbed the spear and as he moved towards the decoy again I stuck him. It was my 2nd trip spearing and I am Hooked. I will post pics soon.

I get the impression that most of the guys here are from Michigan, am I right??? I am guessing though I live in Minnesota fish move much the same seasonally. I have been spearing for 4 years and my buddy and I learned something that I would like to bounce off you guys. In December we had a day where we saw 13 fish, missed one and got one. Now we were out this past Saturday up in 8-10 feet of water and saw two small fish. Now for the reson that I am writing. As the seaon wears on do you guys try deeper and at this time of the year how deep are you spearing in?? We had two flags from tip-ups in about 12-14 feet this past Sat as well. Thank you for any help you can give me!

Hey minnesota,I'm not quite sure if I can shed any light on that subject of depth cause I'm usally between 10 and 15 feet all the time when spearing. I have noticed a drop off in tip up catches(5 to 10 feet) lately. I also seen a drop off in pike activity during the week of the full moon recently.

I'm from Minnesota as well and my buddy and I have a few shantys out. One is in about 8ft and the other is in about 13ft. They are on the same lake and it doesn't really seem to make much of a difference for us. If the fish are moving on a particular day we see as many in one house as the other; generally speaking they all range about the same size.
